Still, if things continue like this, the Phillies may have to print up playoff tickets by Opening Day. Thome, the Phillies' prized free-agent acquisition, sent a screaming liner over the left-field wall at McKechnie Field, almost certainly sending frozen fans in Philadelphia into a red-hot frenzy. The team's new first baseman stepped into a Jeff D'Amico changeup -- the second pitch he saw from the right-hander. By the time he touched first base, Thome finally realized what he had done -- and it was so much more than give the Phillies the lead on their way to a 6-3 win over the Pirates in their Grapefruit League opener. "No matter how long you play, you're kind of jittery for your first at-bat, especially on a new team," he said, still not believing the feat. "I'm like, 'That ball didn't go out.'
